Empowering people with disabilities to live, learn, work, and thrive independently since 1975.
Karen Lachapelle was a tremendous supporter of Community Enterprises and a passionate advocate for people with disabilities. She was a member our Board of Directors for over seventeen years, serving as Chairperson for the last five years of her life. Despite physical limitations due to a rare condition known as osteogenesis imperfecta, Karen possessed incredible energy and was very active. From camping to gardening to world travel, Karen did it all.
Karen believed that everyone should be able to enjoy life to the fullest. Throughout her career, Karen worked to create activity programs accessible to all. She also advocated tirelessly for accommodations to public spaces to make them accessible. Karen’s dedication did not go unnoticed, and she received endless awards and accolades for her work.
Tragically, Karen’s life was cut short due to injuries sustained in a wheelchair accident in 2007. It was a terrible loss not only for her family, but also for Community Enterprises and the greater community in general. To honor her memory and to keep her spirit alive, Community Enterprises and the Lachapelle family formed Karen’s Fund, a recreation and wellness program for people with disabilities. Each year, grants are made available through Karen’s Fund to individuals with disabilities enrolled in Community Enterprises’ services. Recipients have enjoyed activities such as camping, hiking, trips to the beach and to the New England Aquarium, concerts, and the joy of living life to the fullest.
